Tariffs Are Reshaping Module Pricing

Module costs jumped again this quarter as expanded duties on Southeast Asian imports hit distributor inventory. Tier-one panels that booked at 0.28/W in January are quoting 0.36 to 0.41/W today. If you bid jobs in Q1 with old pricing, your margins are bleeding right now.

Re-quote any pending residential or small commercial proposal older than 30 days. Lock distributor pricing in writing before signing the customer contract, not after. Some wholesalers are honoring 14-day price holds only with a deposit.

Storage attachment rates are climbing because the math on export-only systems no longer pencils in most utility territories. Expect more customers asking about batteries on jobs you originally scoped as PV-only.

Rapid Shutdown Enforcement Is Tightening

AHJs in several states are now actively rejecting rooftop arrays without compliant module-level shutdown per NEC 690.12. The 2023 NEC kept the 30V within 1 foot of the array boundary requirement, and inspectors are checking labeling and listed equipment more aggressively than they were two years ago.

If you are still using older optimizer stock, verify the listing covers the 2023 cycle requirements your jurisdiction has adopted. A handful of legacy SKUs got delisted quietly last year and inspectors are catching them on commissioning.

Field tip: photograph the rapid shutdown initiation device and its label during install. Inspectors increasingly want proof the device is accessible and marked per 690.56(C), not just that it exists somewhere on the structure.

Conductor Sizing Mistakes On 1500V Strings

Commercial crews moving from 1000V to 1500V architecture are tripping on conductor ampacity calcs. The higher voltage lets you build longer strings, but NEC 690.8(A) and 690.8(B) still apply, and the 125 percent continuous-duty multiplier is where most plan reviews come back red.

Combine that with 690.7 voltage corrections for cold ambient and you can find yourself one wire size short on the DC home run. Run the temperature correction at the actual record low for the site, not the regional average.

• Calculate Isc x 1.25 (690.8(A)(1)) for circuit current.
• Apply 1.25 again for continuous duty per 690.8(B)(1).
• Adjust ampacity for conduit fill and ambient per 310.15.
• Verify final conductor against OCPD per 240.4.
• Confirm voltage at coldest expected temperature using 690.7.

Battery Storage Is Where The Margin Lives

Residential ESS installs are absorbing the load that pure PV used to carry. NEC Article 706 and the energy storage provisions added in 690.71 changes from earlier cycles still trip up crews who learned solar before storage was common.

Disconnect requirements per 706.7, working space per 110.26, and ventilation for the specific battery chemistry per the manufacturer instructions are the three areas inspectors flag most. Lithium iron phosphate units have different clearance rules than older NMC product, and the 2023 NEC defers heavily to listing instructions.

If you are subbing storage to a specialist, get the line diagram and equipment cut sheets before you pull permit. Half the storage rejections we hear about come from incomplete submittals, not bad workmanship.

Interconnection Queues Are Getting Worse

Several major utilities pushed interconnection study timelines from 60 to 120 days for systems above 25 kW. Some IOUs are flat-out pausing new applications in saturated feeders. Check the hosting capacity map before you sign a commercial proposal, not after.

For residential, NEC 705.12 load-side connections are still the path of least resistance on existing 200A panels, but supply-side taps per 705.11 are becoming common as panel upgrades get harder to schedule. Confirm your meter base is rated for a supply-side tap before you quote it. Not all of them are.

Field tip: when you do a supply-side connection, the disconnect ahead of the inverter circuit must be service-rated and grouped with the existing service disconnect per 705.11(C) and 230.71. Inspectors will check this on every job.

What To Watch Next Week

Module pricing should stabilize once distributors absorb the new tariff schedule, but expect another 4 to 6 weeks of volatility. Storage incentives in California, Massachusetts, and New York are being recalculated mid-program, so verify rebate amounts the day you submit, not the day you bid.

Several manufacturers are pushing firmware updates for rapid shutdown devices to address listing gaps. Check for bulletins from Tigo, Enphase, and SolarEdge before you commission anything from older inventory.
