What Mike Holt actually is

Mike Holt Enterprises sells NEC training, illustrated code books, exam prep, and continuing education. It's been a staple for decades. The material is thorough, heavily illustrated, and built around the Code cycle. If you're preparing for a Master or Journeyman exam, or trying to finally understand grounding vs. bonding, it's one of the most respected sources in the trade.

But most of what Mike Holt puts out was built with the residential and light commercial learner in mind. The deeper you get into commercial and industrial work, 480V gear, 4000A services, transformer secondary conductors, parallel feeders, the more you start hitting the edges of what the core curriculum covers.

Where Mike Holt shines for commercial guys

The grounding and bonding material is the gold standard. If you're pulling permits on a strip mall or a mid-rise and an inspector is pushing back on your GEC sizing or your supply-side bonding jumper, the Mike Holt illustrations on Article 250 will settle the argument. His treatment of 250.30 (separately derived systems) and 250.102 (bonding jumpers) is clearer than the Code itself.

The exam prep is also strong for commercial work. Load calcs under Article 220, feeder and service sizing under 215 and 230, motor calcs under Article 430, all of it gets drilled in with repetition. If you're sitting for a commercial Journeyman or Master test, the practice questions line up with what you'll see.

Where it falls short on the job

Training is not a field reference. When you're standing in an MDP with the cover off and need to know the tap rule for a 400A feeder feeding a 100A panel 18 feet away, you don't want to scrub through a two-hour video or flip through a 900-page illustrated book. You need 240.21(B)(2) in front of you in 15 seconds.

The illustrated Code book is excellent at the kitchen table. In a bucket, on a lift, in a trench, it's a brick. The search is page based. There's no quick jump from 408.4 labeling requirements to the related 110.22 marking rules. You end up flipping, and flipping gets expensive on the clock.

Field tip: if you're roughing a commercial kitchen, tab 210.8(B) for non-dwelling GFCI, 422.5(A) for appliance GFCI, and 210.8(D) for dishwasher branch circuits. Three locations, one violation if you miss any of them.

The commercial gaps nobody mentions

Mike Holt's catalog covers the major articles well, but commercial work regularly pulls you into sections that get lighter treatment. Hazardous locations under Articles 500 through 517 get some coverage, but if you're wiring a paint booth, a commercial garage (511), or a healthcare facility (517), you'll want supplemental material. Same with Article 700 emergency systems, 701 legally required standby, and 702 optional standby. These come up on almost every commercial project of any size and the distinctions between them matter for inspection.

Article 695 fire pumps, 645 information technology equipment, and 725 Class 2 and 3 circuits also get short treatment relative to how often commercial electricians actually work them. If your shop does tenant improvements in office buildings, you live in 725 and 800 (now 800 through 840 in newer cycles).

How it stacks up as a daily reference

For learning, Mike Holt is hard to beat. For daily field reference, it's the wrong tool. The Code book itself is the authority, but raw Code text costs you time when you need a specific answer fast. That's where a searchable reference earns its keep.

Most commercial electricians end up with a stack. The NEC handbook in the truck, a Mike Holt illustrated guide at home or in the shop, and something on the phone for quick lookups in the field. The phone tool is where you ask things like "what's the max OCPD for a 3/0 copper THHN feeder at 75C in a 40C ambient with four current carrying conductors," and you want the answer before you finish the sentence.

Field tip: when a GC asks why a run needs upsized conductors, don't quote the article number. Show them 310.15(B) ampacity adjustment, 310.15(C) correction factors, and do the math on paper. They pay faster when they can see it.

Bottom line for commercial electricians

Buy Mike Holt to learn. Buy Mike Holt to pass your Master or Journeyman. Keep the grounding and bonding book on your desk forever. But don't expect it to replace a fast, searchable Code reference when you're on a job and the super is asking why the inspector red tagged the panel schedule.

The working commercial electrician needs three things: a way to learn the Code deeply, a way to look up the Code fast, and a way to defend a call to an inspector. Mike Holt handles the first one better than almost anyone. The other two are on you to solve.
