How Far From a Shower Opening Does a Hardwired Towel Warmer Need to Be?
The NEC does not give a dimension for a towel warmer. The zone rule people reach for, the 3 foot horizontal by 8 foot vertical measurement, is 410.10(D), and it applies to luminaires, ceiling fans, and similar equipment, not to a heated towel rail. For a towel warmer, the enforceable clearance comes from the manufacturer through 110.3(B).
What 410.10(D) actually covers
Section 410.10(D) says that no parts of cord connected luminaires, chain, cable, or cord suspended luminaires, lighting track, pendants, or ceiling suspended paddle fans shall be located within a zone measured 3 feet horizontally and 8 feet vertically from the top of the bathtub rim or shower stall threshold. Luminaires in that zone must be listed for damp locations, or wet locations where subject to shower spray.
A towel warmer is none of those things. It is a fixed appliance under Article 422. So the zone dimension does not transfer. What does transfer is the concept: the manufacturer knows their product and their listing, and 110.3(B) requires you to install listed equipment in accordance with the instructions included in the listing. Most towel warmer instructions specify a minimum distance from a tub or shower, commonly in the range of 24 to 36 inches, and many specifically prohibit installation where the unit can be reached by a person in the tub or shower.
The rules that do apply
Section 422.5 and 210.8 handle ground fault protection. If the towel warmer is cord and plug connected, the receptacle serving it is a bathroom receptacle and needs GFCI protection under 210.8(A)(1). If it is hardwired, check 210.8(D), which lists the specific hardwired appliances requiring GFCI protection in dwelling units. A towel warmer is not on that list as of the 2023 NEC, but many manufacturers require GFCI protection anyway, and once they do, 110.3(B) makes it mandatory on that installation.
Section 422.31 requires a disconnecting means. For a permanently connected appliance rated 300 volt amperes or less, the branch circuit overcurrent device is permitted to serve as the disconnect. Most towel warmers fall well under that, drawing 150 to 600 watts, so check the nameplate.
Section 404.4 addresses switches in damp and wet locations, and 406.9 addresses receptacles in those locations. If the towel warmer switch is inside the shower enclosure or where it can be reached from the tub, it needs to be outside the wet zone or in a listed weatherproof enclosure. A person standing in a shower should not be able to reach a line voltage switch.
The practical field answer
Mount it where a wet person in the tub or shower cannot touch it, follow the number in the instructions, and keep the branch circuit GFCI protected even where the code does not force it. If the inspector asks for a citation, the answer is 110.3(B) plus the page from the installation manual, and having that page on site ends the conversation.
One more note. If the bathroom already has a GFCI breaker feeding the towel warmer, that satisfies the protection requirement at the panel. A GFCI built into the appliance is not a substitute unless the manufacturer states it provides personnel level protection at 5 milliamperes, since some appliance internal devices are equipment protection at 30 milliamperes instead.
