What is the minimum bend radius for 1 inch EMT with a hand bender?
Section 358.24 is the rule. Bends must be made so the tubing is not damaged and the internal diameter is not effectively reduced, and the radius of the curve to the centerline of any field bend cannot be less than the value shown in Chapter 9 Table 2.
The numbers for trade size 1
Table 2 has two columns. The first is for one shot and full shoe benders, which is what a hand bender is. The second column, labeled other bends, covers segment bending and larger radius methods. At trade size 1, Table 2 lists 5 3/4 inches for one shot and full shoe benders and 6 inches for other bends. Those are centerline radius values, not outside of bend.
Here is the practical part. A listed 1 inch EMT hand bender from any major manufacturer produces a centerline radius in the neighborhood of 8 inches, which is comfortably above the 5 3/4 inch minimum. If you use the correct bender for the conduit size and you follow the shoe, you physically cannot violate Table 2. The table exists to catch improvised bending, hickeys used on the wrong size, and segment bends made with too few shots.
Where installers actually get in trouble
The failure mode on 1 inch EMT is not radius, it is deformation. Section 358.24 also prohibits effectively reducing the internal diameter. A kinked or flattened bend fails that clause even if the radius measures fine. Overbending past the shoe, bending on the wrong mark, or bending cold in very low temperatures all produce flat spots on the outside of the arc.
Take up is the other one. Standard take up on a 1 inch hand bender is 8 inches. That is the distance from the end of the conduit to the arrow mark for a 90 degree stub, and it is stamped on the bender. Get the take up wrong and the stub height is wrong, which tempts people to reef the bend into a tighter radius to make up the difference.
Total bends between pull points
Section 358.26 limits you to the equivalent of four quarter bends, or 360 degrees total, between pull points such as conduit bodies and boxes. Offsets count. Two 30 degree kicks are 60 degrees against your budget. A run with two 90s, a saddle, and an offset is usually already at or past the limit, and pulling through it will damage conductor insulation even though nothing in the run violates Table 2 individually.
