Does a range plug have to be on a GFCI circuit in a house?
Under the 2023 NEC, yes in most cases. Section 210.8(A) requires GFCI protection for all receptacles rated 150 volts or less to ground and 50 amperes or less installed in the listed dwelling unit locations, and kitchens are on that list. A 50 ampere, 125/250 volt range receptacle in a dwelling kitchen falls squarely inside the scope.
How the rule got here
For decades 210.8(A) applied only to 125 volt, 15 and 20 ampere receptacles. The 2020 edition expanded it to receptacles rated 250 volts or less in the listed areas. The 2023 edition rewrote the opening paragraph again to read all receptacles rated 150 volts or less to ground and 50 amperes or less, plus receptacles supplied by single phase branch circuits rated 150 volts or less to ground where the receptacle rating exceeds 50 amperes, and three phase branch circuits rated 150 volts or less to ground where the receptacle rating exceeds 100 amperes.
A 125/250 volt receptacle on a 120/240 volt system is 120 volts to ground, so it meets the 150 volts to ground test. A 14-50 or 6-50 range receptacle is 50 amperes, so it meets the amperage test. Both conditions are satisfied, and there is no exception for cooking equipment in 210.8(A).
Which edition applies to you
This is where the answer changes by jurisdiction. If your area is still on the 2017 NEC, a 250 volt range receptacle is outside 210.8(A) entirely and needs no GFCI. On the 2020 edition, the 250 volt language brought it in. On the 2023 edition it is clearly in. Several states have amended 210.8(A) to remove or delay the requirement for ranges and dryers because of nuisance tripping complaints, so confirm the adopted edition and any state amendments before you quote the job.
Hardwired ranges and the outlet distinction
Section 210.8(A) applies to receptacles. A range that is hardwired has no receptacle, so 210.8(A) does not reach it. Check 210.8(D), which covers GFCI protection for outlets supplying specific appliances rated 150 volts or less to ground and 60 amperes or less, and lists dishwashers, electric ranges, wall mounted ovens, counter mounted cooking units, clothes dryers, and microwave ovens among others. The 2023 text of 210.8(D) applies to outlets, not just receptacles, so a hardwired range in a dwelling can be pulled in by that subsection.
Practical notes on nuisance tripping
Older ranges and dryers can leak enough current through heating elements and insulation to trip a 5 milliampere GFCI. If a new GFCI breaker trips on an existing appliance, megger the appliance branch circuit conductors first to rule out a wiring fault, then check the appliance itself. A leaking bake element is the usual culprit. Do not defeat the GFCI to make the complaint go away.
Also verify the breaker is listed for the application. A two pole GFCI breaker needs the neutral landed on the breaker pigtail terminal and the panel neutral pigtail landed on the neutral bar. Reversing them causes an immediate trip.
