Can I use a regular rigid connector in a methane gas classified zone?

No. In a Class I location, a standard setscrew or compression connector is not permitted. Section 501.10(A)(1) limits Class I, Division 1 wiring methods to threaded rigid metal conduit or threaded steel intermediate metal conduit, Type MI cable with listed fittings, Type MC-HL cable with listed fittings, Type ITC-HL cable, and specific flexible fittings listed for the location. Section 501.10(B) permits a somewhat broader list in Division 2, including threaded RMC and IMC, enclosed gasketed busways, PLTC and ITC in cable tray, and Types MC, MV, TC, or TC-ER cable with listed fittings.

Methane and where it lands

Methane is a flammable gas, so a location where it may be present in ignitible concentrations is a Class I location under 500.5(B). Methane in most industrial and utility settings falls in Group D, although mining applications are outside the scope of the NEC and are covered by federal mining regulations. Digester gas at a wastewater plant and landfill gas both bring Class I classification with them, and the area classification drawing on the job is what governs, not a general rule of thumb.

Section 500.8(E) is the connection rule. All boxes, fittings, and joints must be threaded for connection to conduit or cable terminations and shall be explosionproof. Threaded joints must be made up with at least five threads fully engaged, with an allowance down to four and a half threads for factory threaded NPT entries in listed explosionproof equipment. A setscrew connector has no threaded engagement into the enclosure and no flame path, so it cannot contain an internal explosion.

Sealing fittings

Section 501.15 is what most people are asking about when they ask about eye connectors and seals. In Class I, Division 1, a conduit seal is required within 450 mm, or 18 inches, of each enclosure that contains apparatus that may produce arcs, sparks, or high temperatures. Seals are also required where a conduit of trade size 2 or larger enters an enclosure housing terminals, splices, or taps.

Section 501.15(A)(4) requires a seal where a conduit leaves a Class I, Division 1 location. The sealing fitting may be on either side of the boundary within 3.05 m, or 10 feet, and there shall be no union, coupling, box, or fitting other than a listed explosionproof reducer at the conduit entry between the sealing fitting and the point at which the conduit leaves the location. Section 501.15(B)(2) applies the same boundary concept to Division 2.

Installing the seal correctly

Section 501.15(C) governs the fitting itself. Seals must be listed for the purpose and accessible. The sealing compound must be listed for the fitting and provide a seal against passage of gas or vapor through the fitting, with a melting point not less than 93 degrees C, or 200 degrees F. The thickness of the compound must be not less than the trade size of the sealing fitting and in no case less than 16 mm, or 5/8 inch. Splices and taps are not permitted inside a sealing fitting, and the fitting must not be filled with compound until the conductors are in place and the packing fiber is dammed.

Section 501.15(D) caps conductor fill in a seal at 25 percent of the cross sectional area of a rigid metal conduit of the same trade size, unless the fitting is specifically listed for a higher percentage.

Field takeaway
