What are the strapping requirements for 1 inch PVC conduit?
Support 1 inch rigid PVC conduit within 3 feet of each outlet box, junction box, device box, conduit body, cabinet, or other termination, and then at intervals not exceeding 3 feet along the run. Both numbers come from Section 352.30. The 3 foot termination rule is 352.30(A). The 3 foot interval comes from Table 352.30(B), which is keyed to trade size.
Table 352.30(B) support intervals
Trade size 1/2 through 1: 3 feet. Trade size 1 1/4 through 2: 5 feet. Trade size 2 1/2 through 3: 6 feet. Trade size 3 1/2 through 5: 7 feet. Trade size 6: 8 feet. Notice how counterintuitive the small sizes are. A 1 inch run needs a strap every 3 feet while a 2 inch run gets 5 feet, because the small pipe sags under its own weight and its conductor fill.
Why PVC is stricter than EMT
EMT under 358.30(A) gets 10 foot intervals with the same 3 foot termination rule. PVC is a thermoplastic that creeps under sustained load and softens as ambient temperature rises, so the intervals are much tighter. That same thermal behavior drives 352.44, which requires an expansion fitting where the length change calculated from Table 352.44 is 1/4 inch or more. PVC expands roughly 4.06 inches per 100 feet per 100 degree F temperature change, so a 100 foot exposed outdoor run seeing a 100 degree F swing moves over 4 inches. That is a lot of stress on a strap and a box.
Straps and support details that get flagged
Section 352.30(B) requires the conduit to be fastened so it is permitted to move axially at the support, to allow for that expansion and contraction. Two-hole straps clamped tight on an exposed run with a long temperature swing fight the expansion fitting. Use straps that permit axial movement on those runs.
Section 352.10(F) permits PVC for exposed work where not subject to physical damage if identified for the application, and 352.12(C) prohibits PVC where subject to physical damage unless identified for the purpose. Schedule 80 is the usual answer for exposed locations at risk, and remember Schedule 80 has a smaller interior, so recalculate fill from Chapter 9 Table 4, do not reuse the Schedule 40 numbers.
Underground PVC is not strapped, but 300.5 burial depths and 300.5(D)(4) protection where it emerges still apply, and the elbow at the stub-up commonly needs to be supported within 3 feet of where it comes out of grade if it terminates into a box or enclosure above ground.
