Can 8/3 Romex go into a half inch NM connector?

In almost every case, no. An 8/3 NM-B cable with ground is a large flat cable, roughly 0.6 inches across the wide dimension, and the common half inch NM connector is listed for a much smaller range. The rule that decides this is not a dimension published in the NEC, it is the listing printed on the connector carton.

110.3(B) is the controlling section

Section 110.3(B) of the 2023 NEC requires listed or labeled equipment to be installed and used in accordance with any instructions included in the listing or labeling. Cable connectors are listed to UL 514B with a specific cable size range, and that range is printed on the box, on the bag, and often stamped on the fitting body. If the marking says 14/2 through 10/3, then 8/3 is outside the listing and the installation violates 110.3(B) even if you can physically force the cable through.

Most half inch two screw and single screw NM connectors top out around 10/3 or 8/2. Standard 8/3 NM-B normally calls for a 3/4 inch connector. Some manufacturers publish a half inch connector rated for one 8/3, so read the marking rather than trusting a rule of thumb. If the marking is gone, treat it as not listed for the cable.

Why forcing it fails

Section 314.17(B)(2) requires nonmetallic sheathed cable entering a box to be secured and to have at least 1/4 inch of sheath inside the box. Section 300.4(F) and 334.10 style protection rules exist so the jacket is not damaged where it passes into an enclosure. Overdriving a clamp on an oversize cable crushes the conductors, cracks the sheath, and can nick the insulation on the ungrounded conductors, which is exactly the failure mode that shows up as a fault six months later.

There is also a box fill consequence. Section 314.16(B)(1) counts each conductor 14 AWG and larger entering the box, and 314.16(B)(5) adds a volume allowance for the largest conductor when a clamp is inside the box. Three 8 AWG conductors plus the ground plus the clamp allowance is 2.5 cubic inches each for the current carrying conductors, which fills a standard device box quickly. Pushing 8/3 into an undersized enclosure is a separate violation from the connector problem.

Do it the clean way

Use a 3/4 inch NM connector listed for the cable and open the knockout to match. A 3/4 inch knockout in a metal enclosure is standard, and if you are landing on a plastic box, use a box with an integral clamp rated for the cable or a metal box with the correct fitting. When you are running 8/3 to a range, a dryer, or a subpanel feeder, plan the enclosure entry at rough in so you are not fighting the knockout at trim.

Tighten the clamp until the cable is held firmly without deforming the jacket. Section 334.30 still requires the cable to be secured within 12 inches of the box, and a properly sized connector counts as that securement for a single gang box with a clamp only under the conditions in 334.30(B).

Field takeaway

Read the connector marking, not the trade size alone. Standard 8/3 NM-B needs a 3/4 inch connector unless the specific product is listed for it. Forcing it into a half inch fitting is a 110.3(B) violation and a jacket damage risk at the same time.
