Can I install a 50 amp outlet with 12 AWG wire?

No. Two independent rules block it, and neither one has an exception that helps here. A 50 ampere receptacle belongs on a 50 ampere branch circuit, and 12 AWG copper cannot be part of a 50 ampere branch circuit under any normal installation.

The small conductor rule

Section 240.4(D) of the 2023 NEC limits overcurrent protection for small conductors regardless of what the ampacity tables say. Item (5) sets 12 AWG copper at a maximum of 20 amperes, and item (6) sets 10 AWG copper at 30 amperes. Table 310.16 shows 12 AWG THHN at 30 amperes in the 90 degree column, but 240.4(D) overrides that for overcurrent protection, and 110.14(C) caps you at the 60 or 75 degree column at the terminations anyway.

That means the largest breaker you can put ahead of 12 AWG copper on a normal branch circuit is 20 amperes. A 50 ampere breaker feeding 12 AWG is a bare conductor for practical purposes, because the wire will reach failure temperature long before the breaker sees a reason to trip.

The receptacle rating rule

Section 210.21(B)(1) says a single receptacle installed on an individual branch circuit shall have an ampere rating not less than that of the branch circuit. Table 210.21(B)(3) covers multiple receptacles and shows the permitted ratings for each circuit size. A 50 ampere receptacle is only permitted on a 50 ampere circuit. Section 210.23 then limits what you can connect to the circuit based on its rating.

So even if someone tried to reason that the load is small, installing a 50 ampere receptacle guarantees that at some point a 50 ampere cord cap gets plugged into it. The receptacle configuration is a promise to the next person about what the circuit can deliver.

What 50 amperes actually needs

For a 50 ampere circuit at 75 degrees Celsius, Table 310.16 gives 6 AWG copper at 65 amperes and 8 AWG copper at 50 amperes. Section 240.4(B) permits the next standard size up in specific cases, but for a receptacle circuit the conventional and safest build is 6 AWG copper conductors with a 10 AWG equipment grounding conductor from Table 250.122, on a 50 ampere breaker. Many electricians use 6/3 with ground NM-B for a range, remembering that 334.80 requires NM cable ampacity to be based on the 60 degree column, where 6 AWG copper is 55 amperes.

If the actual load is small, the correct move is to install a receptacle that matches the load, not to install an oversized receptacle on undersized wire. A 5-20R on 12 AWG and a 20 ampere breaker is a complete, compliant circuit.

Field takeaway

Twelve gauge copper means 20 amperes, full stop, under 240.4(D)(5). If the job needs a 50 ampere receptacle, pull 6 AWG copper, land a 10 AWG ground, and put it on a 50 ampere breaker. Matching the receptacle to the wire instead of the wire to the receptacle is how these circuits burn.
