How far does my pool pump need to be from the pool to avoid a GFCI breaker?

Distance does not get you out of GFCI anymore. Under NEC 2023 680.21(C), pool pump motors connected to single phase branch circuits of 150 volts or less to ground, 60 amps or less, require GFCI protection whether hardwired or cord-and-plug, at any distance. Moving the pump farther from the water changes receptacle placement rules, not the GFCI requirement for the motor circuit.

How we got here

Older editions tied pump GFCI to receptacle location and 15 or 20 amp circuits, and a lot of installers remember the 2017 rules. The 2020 cycle extended GFCI to hardwired pump motors, and 2023 expanded it to 250 volt and larger circuits up to 60 amps. If your jurisdiction is still on 2017, the answer differs, so confirm the adopted edition. On 2023, plan every residential pool pump on a GFCI breaker.

Receptacle distances under 680.22

The receptacle that supplies the pump motor must be located at least 6 feet from the inside walls of the pool, and where within 10 feet it must be a single receptacle of the locking and grounding type with GFCI protection per 680.22(A)(1). General convenience receptacles must be at least 6 feet away, and at a dwelling at least one receptacle is required between 6 and 20 feet from the pool wall, no more than 6 feet 6 inches above grade. All 125 volt, 15 and 20 amp receptacles within 20 feet require GFCI protection.

Nuisance tripping

If the pump trips the GFCI, treat it as a real leakage signal first. Variable speed drives can leak a little through their filters, and old motors with degraded winding insulation leak a lot. Check the equipotential bonding lug on the motor, keep the cord and whip intact, and try a current production GFCI breaker before condemning the pump. A pump that will not hold on a healthy modern GFCI has current going somewhere it should not, next to water your customers swim in.

Do not forget the rest of the pool package: insulated copper equipotential bonding conductor 8 AWG minimum per 680.26, maintenance disconnect within sight of the pool equipment and at least 5 feet from the water per 680.13, and no general receptacles closer than 6 feet.
