What are the NEC requirements for a standby generator?
A residential standby generator falls under NEC 2023 Article 702, Optional Standby Systems, along with Article 445 for the generator itself. The rules are less about the machine and more about how it connects to the premises wiring, because the number one hazard is backfeeding the utility.
Transfer equipment is mandatory
NEC 702.4(B) and 702.5 require transfer equipment suitable for the intended use that prevents inadvertent interconnection of the normal and alternate sources. That means a listed transfer switch, either automatic or manual, or an interlock kit listed for the panel. A cord from the generator into a dryer receptacle is a code violation and a lineman killer, full stop.
Sizing the system
For a manual transfer setup, 702.4(B)(1) lets the user select loads, so the generator only needs to handle what gets switched on. With an automatic transfer switch, 702.4(B)(2) requires the generator to carry the full calculated load of everything it serves, or use an approved load management system that sheds load to stay within nameplate. That is why whole-house automatic installs either get a big generator or a load-shedding module on the AC and ranges.
Disconnect, signage, and location
Permanently installed generators need a disconnecting means per 445.18 that can be locked in the open position. An emergency disconnect or meter-mount transfer switch outside also has to play nice with 230.85 service disconnect rules. Add the signage: 702.7 requires a placard at the service disconnect indicating the type and location of the on-site standby source. Keep the generator clearances per the manufacturer listing, typically 18 inches from the house and 5 feet from openings, since 110.3(B) makes the instructions enforceable.
Grounding and bonding
Most home standby generators are non-separately-derived systems: the neutral is not switched in the transfer switch, so the generator neutral stays bonded at the service and the generator frame is grounded through the equipment grounding conductor per 250.35. If your transfer switch does switch the neutral, the generator becomes a separately derived system and needs its own grounding electrode connection per 250.30. Check which one you have before landing the neutral bond, because getting it wrong puts objectionable current on the EGC.
Field notes
Run the fuel and load calcs before quoting. A 22 kW air-cooled unit on natural gas often derates below nameplate, and the inspector will ask for the load calculation on automatic installs.
