Do AC units need to be on ground fault breakers?
Under NEC 2023 as written, yes for dwellings: 210.8(F) requires GFCI protection for outdoor outlets supplied by single phase branch circuits rated 150 volts or less to ground and 50 amps or less, and that includes the condenser outside a house. This has been one of the most argued code changes in years, so the details matter.
The TIA delay
Because early installs saw nuisance tripping between some GFCI breakers and some condenser and mini split drives, the NFPA issued a tentative interim amendment that pushed the effective date for HVAC equipment. Under the TIA to NEC 2023 210.8(F), GFCI protection for listed HVAC equipment is not required until September 1, 2026. After that date, new installs on the 2023 code need the GFCI breaker unless your state amended the rule out.
Check your adoption
What applies on your job depends on which edition and amendments your state or city adopted. Some states are still on NEC 2017 or 2020 with 210.8(F) amended out entirely; others adopted 2023 intact. Ask your AHJ before you price the job, because a 2 pole GFCI breaker can add real cost, and some jurisdictions also accept the equipment being hardwired versus cord connected differently than the code text suggests.
Field notes
If you do install GFCI protection on a condenser or mini split, use current production breakers and check the equipment manufacturer bulletins. Several drive makers have released updated boards and filters that live happily on GFCI protection. Keep the equipment grounding path clean and tight, since a real ground fault should trip the device; that is the point. And remember 210.8(F) applies to dwelling outdoor outlets generally, so the outdoor receptacle serving the unit already needed GFCI under 210.8(A) regardless.
