Would Using Zip Ties for Wire Management in a Panel Be Considered Bundling?
A user asked the app whether zip tying cables neatly inside a panel counts as bundling for derating purposes. The concern comes from NEC 2023 Section 310.15(C)(1), which requires ampacity adjustment when conductors are bundled longer than 24 inches without maintaining spacing. The good news for anyone who likes a clean panel: zip tied dressing inside an enclosure almost never crosses that line.
The 24 inch trigger
Derating under Table 310.15(C)(1) applies when more than three current carrying conductors are stacked or bundled for a distance longer than 24 inches. Inside a typical residential or commercial panelboard, the tied portion of any group of conductors runs a few inches from the knockout down the gutter before the wires fan out to breakers and bars. Measure the actual continuous bundled length. If the tied section is 24 inches or less, no adjustment factor applies no matter how many conductors are in the group.
Where it becomes real is a tall panel fed from the bottom with circuits dressed in one continuous harness up the full height of the gutter, or cables zip tied together as they leave the panel and run along a joist for several feet. Nine current carrying conductors bundled past 24 inches take a 70 percent adjustment, which turns a 20 amp rated 12 AWG at 90 degrees C into 21 amps, barely passing, and 14 AWG lighting circuits start failing. Long bundled home runs above a panel are the classic violation, not the ties inside the can.
Practical panel dressing rules
Zip ties themselves are fine inside equipment, and 110.12 workmanship is the section inspectors lean on to appreciate a neat job. Use ties rated for the environment: standard nylon is fine in a dry interior panel, but in a hot attic, outdoors, or in a wet location, use UV rated or stainless ties. Do not cinch ties so tight they deform insulation on smaller conductors. Keep bundles loose enough to slide a wire, break long harnesses with gaps so no continuous bundle passes 24 inches, and never tie conductors to the panel interior in a way that blocks breaker removal or gutter space needed under 312.6.
