What Is the Minimum Height for a 60 Amp Subpanel Above the Floor?

A user asked the app how high the bottom of a 60 amp subpanel must be from the ground. The surprising answer is that the NEC has no minimum height for a panelboard. The Code controls the maximum height of the breaker handles and the working space in front of the equipment, and those two rules are what actually decide where the panel lands on the wall.

The maximum that does exist

NEC 2023 240.24(A) requires the center of the grip of the highest overcurrent device operating handle to be no more than 6 ft 7 in above the floor or working platform. That is the ceiling on panel placement. There is no companion floor rule, so a subpanel mounted low on a wall is not a violation by height alone. In practice, installers set panels so the main or top breaker lands around eye level, commonly putting the top of the can between 5 and 6 feet.

Working space still applies at any height

Section 110.26(A) requires a working space 30 inches wide, 36 inches deep for ordinary 120/240 volt equipment, and 6.5 feet high or the height of the equipment, whichever is greater, measured from the floor or platform. The panel has to sit within that clear zone, the space cannot be used for storage, and the doors must open at least 90 degrees. A panel mounted very low can create a practical working space problem because you would be servicing it on your knees, and some inspectors push back on that basis, but the Code itself does not state a number for the bottom of the enclosure.

Location restrictions that matter more

What trips people up on subpanel installs is rarely height. It is location. Panelboards cannot be installed in bathrooms per 240.24(E) or over the steps of a stairway per 240.24(F), and clothes closets are off limits for overcurrent devices near easily ignitible material per 240.24(D). In a garage, protect the panel from vehicle damage or locate it out of the path. If the subpanel is in a wet or damp location, the enclosure must be rated for it per 110.28. Also remember that a 60 amp subpanel needs its neutrals and grounds separated, with the bonding screw removed, and a 4 wire feeder per 250.32 if it is in a detached structure.
