Can I Install a NEMA 14-50R Below the Panel on a 50 Amp Breaker?

A user asked the app whether a NEMA 14-50R receptacle can be installed directly underneath the panel on a standard 2 pole 50 amp breaker. Yes, that combination is exactly what the Code expects. A 50 amp receptacle on a 50 amp branch circuit satisfies NEC 2023 Table 210.21(B)(3), and mounting it below the panel is fine as long as you respect the working space rules.

Matching the receptacle, breaker, and wire

The 14-50R is rated 50 amps, 125/250 volts, with two hots, a neutral, and a ground. On an individual branch circuit, 210.21(B)(1) requires the receptacle rating to be at least the circuit rating, so 50 on 50 is correct. Conductors must carry 50 amps at the termination temperature: 6 AWG copper THHN in conduit works at 75 degrees C, while NM cable is held to the 60 degree column by 334.80, which also lands 6 AWG copper at exactly 55 amps, so 6/3 NM is the common cable choice. Aluminum needs 4 AWG. If the load is an EV charger, remember 625.42 and continuous load math: a cord connected EVSE on a 50 amp circuit is limited to 40 amps of continuous charging.

GFCI protection is the part people miss

Location decides this. NEC 2023 210.8(A) requires GFCI protection for receptacles in dwelling garages, unfinished basements, outdoors, and several other areas, and the expanded rule covers receptacles up to 250 volts, which pulls the 14-50 in. If your panel and new receptacle are in a garage or unfinished basement, you need a GFCI 2 pole 50 amp breaker, not a standard one. In a finished interior room that is not on the 210.8(A) list, a standard breaker is acceptable. Ranges in kitchens have their own considerations, so check the current adopted edition in your area, because GFCI scope changed between recent code cycles.

Working space in front of the panel

Mounting the receptacle under the panel does not violate anything by itself. Section 110.26 requires clear working space 30 inches wide, 36 inches deep, and 6.5 feet high in front of the panel, and a flush receptacle does not obstruct that space. What will cause a problem is whatever gets plugged in and parked there. If an RV cord or an EV charging cable permanently occupies the space in front of the panel, an inspector can call the working space obstructed. Offsetting the receptacle a couple of feet to the side avoids the argument entirely and costs one extra foot of wire.
