Do 4 Square Boxes Need Support Independent of the Conduit?

A user asked the app whether 4 square boxes need to be supported independently from the conduit. For the way most 4 squares are installed, on EMT, the answer is yes: the box needs its own securement to the structure, because EMT is never permitted to be the sole support of a box. Conduit supported boxes are legal only with threaded raceways under the specific conditions in NEC 2023 314.23.

What 314.23 actually allows

Section 314.23(A) through (H) lists every permitted support method, and two subsections cover raceway support. 314.23(E) applies to enclosures without devices or luminaires: the box may be supported by two or more conduits threaded wrenchtight into the enclosure or into hubs, with each conduit secured within 3 feet of the enclosure, or within 18 inches if all conduit entries are on the same side. 314.23(F) covers enclosures that do contain devices or luminaires, and it tightens the securement distance to 18 inches for each conduit regardless. In both cases the raceways in question are threaded types, rigid metal conduit or IMC. Set screw and compression EMT connectors are not threaded joints, so a 4 square hanging off two EMT sticks, no matter how well strapped the EMT is, does not meet the rule.

What independent support looks like

Fasten the box to the structure per 314.23(B): screws to framing, a listed bracket, strut, or a bar hanger between members. In suspended ceilings, 314.23(D) allows support from the ceiling framing members with listed clips, but tie wire alone to a grid wire is only acceptable where the framing member itself is supported and the box is secured to it in an approved way. For boxes on strut racks, a strut mounted box clamp does the job cleanly. The point of the rule is simple: a box that flexes or drops when someone leans a ladder on the conduit puts stress on conductors and terminations.

The field test

Ask two questions on the walk. Are the conduits entering the box threaded rigid or IMC, wrenchtight, and secured within the 18 inch or 3 foot distance? Does the box contain a device or fixture? If the answer to the first is no, the box needs structure support, full stop. This is one of the most common punch list items in commercial rough in, and it costs seconds with a self drilling screw during install versus an argument at inspection.
