How Do You Connect Rigid Conduit to EMT?

A user asked the app how to connect rigid conduit to EMT. This comes up constantly where a rigid stub through a slab or wall meets an EMT run, or where an outdoor rigid riser transitions to interior EMT. There are three clean, listed ways to do it, and one popular jobsite method that fails inspection.

Method one: threaded coupling plus EMT adapter

Thread a standard rigid coupling onto the rigid conduit, then screw in an EMT connector of the matching trade size so its male threads engage the coupling like a chase nipple would. A set screw or compression EMT connector with its locknut removed works because the connector body has standard NPS threads. The joint must be made up wrenchtight per NEC 2023 342.42 and 344.42 so it stays electrically continuous. This is the everyday field solution and every supply house stocks the parts.

Method two: a listed transition coupling

Manufacturers make combination couplings listed specifically for rigid to EMT transitions: threaded on one end, set screw or compression on the other. These are the most defensible option because the listing covers exactly this use, satisfying 110.3(B). Threadless couplings listed for rigid conduit are also permitted by 344.42(A) where cutting threads is impractical, and some are dual rated for EMT on one side. Check the marking on the fitting; if it only says EMT, it is not rated to grip rigid pipe wall.

Method three: land both in a box

Where the transition happens near a junction point anyway, terminate the rigid with a locknut and bushing into a box or conduit body and start the EMT from the other side with its own connector. This adds a pull point, which long runs often need anyway to respect the 360 degree bend limit between pull points in 344.26 and 358.26.

What not to do

Do not slide an oversized EMT compression fitting over rigid pipe and crank it down. The tube outside diameters differ from rigid conduit outside diameters, the fitting is not listed to bite threaded heavy wall, and the connection is neither mechanically secure per 300.10 nor a reliable fault current path. Also remember that where the raceway serves as the equipment grounding conductor per 250.118, every fitting in the run is part of the ground path, so a sloppy transition is a grounding problem, not just a mechanical one. In wet locations, use raintight rated fittings for the EMT side per 358.42 and appropriate sealing at the transition.
