How Many 6 AWG THHN Wires Fit in 3/4 Inch Conduit?
A user asked the app how many 6 AWG THHN conductors fit in 3/4 inch conduit. The answer depends on the raceway type, because different conduits of the same trade size have different internal areas. For 3/4 inch EMT the answer is four conductors. For 3/4 inch Schedule 40 PVC the answer drops to three.
The fill math
Chapter 9 Table 1 of NEC 2023 limits three or more conductors to 40 percent of the raceway cross section. A 6 AWG THHN conductor has an area of 0.0507 square inches per Chapter 9 Table 5. Three quarter inch EMT has a total internal area of 0.533 square inches per Table 4, and 40 percent of that is 0.213 square inches. Dividing 0.213 by 0.0507 gives 4.2, which truncates to four conductors. Schedule 40 PVC in the same trade size has less room, and its 40 percent allowance works out to only three of the same wires. Informative Annex C tables give you these counts directly so you do not have to run the division on a ladder: Table C.1 for EMT shows four, and the PVC tables show three.
Rigid metal conduit and IMC in 3/4 inch also land on four. Schedule 80 PVC, with its thicker wall, holds just two. This is the classic reason a wire pull that worked in EMT jams when someone swaps to PVC without upsizing.
The derating catch at four conductors
Fill is only half the question. Once you have four or more current carrying conductors in a raceway, Table 310.15(C)(1) requires an ampacity adjustment of 80 percent. THHN 6 AWG starts at 75 amps in the 90 degree C column, and 80 percent of that is 60 amps, so even four current carrying 6 AWG conductors still support a typical 50 or 55 amp application. Neutrals that carry only unbalanced current in a normal 120/240 volt circuit do not count toward the number, and equipment grounding conductors never count, but a ground wire does occupy physical space and must be included in the fill calculation.
If you are pulling two hot legs, a neutral, and a ground for something like a range or subpanel feeder, that is four physical wires. In EMT you are compliant. In Schedule 40 PVC you need 1 inch conduit. When in doubt, upsize the raceway; the pull gets easier and future circuits get cheaper.
