How Many 12 AWG THHN Wires Fit in a 1/2 Inch EMT Conduit?

A user asked the app how many 12 AWG THHN conductors fit in a half inch pipe. For EMT, the answer straight from NEC 2023 Informative Annex C, Table C.1 is nine conductors. When every wire in the raceway is the same size and insulation type, Annex C does the Chapter 9 math for you, and nine 12 THHN at 0.0133 square inches each lands just inside the 40 percent fill of half inch EMT, which is 0.122 square inches.

Fill is not the real limit, heat is

Nine wires legal for fill does not mean nine circuits at full ampacity. Under 310.15(C)(1), once more than three current carrying conductors share a raceway, ampacity gets adjusted: 4 to 6 conductors keep 80 percent, 7 to 9 keep 70 percent. You start the math from the 90 degree column because THHN is a 90 degree conductor, where 12 AWG is 30 amps. At 70 percent that becomes 21 amps, which still supports a 20 amp breaker. That is the classic reason nine is a sweet spot: it is the most 12 THHN you can run in one raceway and still protect every circuit at 20 amps. Go to ten conductors and the 50 percent bracket drops you to 15 amps.

What counts as current carrying

Equipment grounds do not count toward the derate. Neutrals of two wire circuits do count. A neutral of a multiwire branch circuit carrying only unbalanced current does not count, which is why three MWBCs in one half inch EMT, nine wires total but only six that count, is such a clean layout at 80 percent. Count carefully before assuming the 70 percent bracket.

Other conduit types differ

The nine wire answer is specific to EMT. Half inch Schedule 40 PVC holds eight 12 THHN, and flexible metal conduit holds nine. If you are in a different raceway, check the matching Annex C table rather than assuming EMT numbers carry over.
