How Many #12 Wires Can You Put in a 2 Inch Nipple?
A user asked the app how many 12 AWG conductors fit in a 2 inch nipple. For a 2 inch EMT nipple 24 inches or shorter with #12 THHN, the fill answer is about 151 conductors. That number surprises people because nipples play by their own rules, and both of those rules are generous.
The 60 percent nipple rule
Chapter 9, Table 1, Note 4 in NEC 2023 says a conduit or tubing nipple between boxes or enclosures that does not exceed 24 inches may be filled to 60 percent of its total cross sectional area instead of the usual 40 percent. Table 4 lists 2 inch EMT at 3.356 square inches total, so 60 percent gives 2.013 square inches of usable space. Table 5 lists #12 THHN at 0.0133 square inches. Dividing 2.013 by 0.0133 gives 151 conductors. Run the same math for other trade sizes and types: 2 inch rigid PVC schedule 40 is slightly smaller inside, and larger insulations like THW drop the count fast, so always match the table to the actual raceway and insulation.
No ampacity derating in a short nipple
The second break is 310.15(C)(1), which requires bundling adjustment factors only where conductors are installed in a raceway longer than 24 inches. A true nipple never triggers the adjustment, so each #12 keeps its full ampacity even with dozens of neighbors. This is exactly why gutter and trough layouts connect enclosures with short nipples: you can consolidate a wall of circuits through one fat nipple without derating a single conductor. Stretch that same raceway to 25 inches and the picture flips; with more than thirty current carrying conductors the adjustment factor falls to 45 percent or below and #12 THHN stops being a 20 amp conductor.
Practical ceilings before the code one
Fill tables do not account for pulling reality. Past 40 or 50 conductors, the bundle binds in the connectors and the locknut area, so most electricians plan well under the printed maximum. Watch the box side too: conductor fill in the enclosure is governed by 314.16 for boxes, and terminating 151 wires needs a gutter or panel with real space. Also count your equipment grounds and neutrals honestly; every wire occupies area whether or not it carries current, even though only current carrying conductors matter for derating.
