How Many Outlets Can You Put on a 20 Amp Circuit?
A user asked the app how many outlets one 20 amp breaker can serve. In a dwelling, the NEC sets no maximum number of receptacles on a 15 or 20 amp general purpose circuit. In commercial and industrial occupancies there is a real number: 13 receptacles on a 20 amp circuit.
Where the 13 comes from
For non dwelling occupancies, 220.14(I) assigns each receptacle strap a load of 180 VA. A 20 amp, 120 volt circuit supplies 2400 VA, and 2400 divided by 180 is 13.3, so 13 receptacles is the ceiling. On a 15 amp circuit the same math gives 10. Dwellings are exempt from that per receptacle calculation because 220.14(J) rolls general receptacles into the 3 VA per square foot general lighting load instead, which is why no count limit exists in a house.
No limit is not a design
Just because you may put 30 receptacles on one circuit in a house does not mean you should. The practical approach is to think in terms of what plugs in. Bedrooms sharing one 20 amp circuit with a window AC and a space heater will trip; a garage circuit feeding freezers and a compressor deserves to be alone. A common rule of thumb is 8 to 10 receptacles per 20 amp circuit in living areas, fewer where you know the loads are heavy. The 80 percent factor from 210.20 applies to continuous loads, so a circuit expected to run near 16 amps for hours needs rethinking, not more outlets.
Circuits with mandatory separation
Several dwelling circuits cannot absorb extra receptacles at all. The two small appliance branch circuits required by 210.11(C)(1) serve only kitchen, pantry, and dining receptacles per 210.52(B). The laundry circuit from 210.11(C)(2) and the bathroom 20 amp circuit from 210.11(C)(3) are similarly restricted, and the garage receptacle circuit under 210.11(C)(4) cannot feed outlets elsewhere. Load those circuits with their required outlets and nothing more, and spread everything else with judgment rather than chasing a maximum the code never wrote.
