What Wire and PVC Size Do I Need for a 50 Amp Hot Tub?
A user asked the app how to wire a 50 amp hot tub, including wire size, PVC size, and the codes involved. The short list: 6 AWG THWN-2 copper conductors, a 10 AWG insulated copper equipment ground, 1 inch schedule 40 PVC, a 50 amp two pole GFCI breaker, and a disconnect within sight of the spa.
Conductors and conduit fill
From Table 310.16, 6 AWG copper THWN-2 carries 65 amps at 75 degrees C, an easy pass for a 50 amp circuit. Most packaged spas want two hots and a neutral because the controls run on 120 volts, plus the equipment grounding conductor sized at 10 AWG per Table 250.122. NEC 680.21 and 680.42 require an insulated copper equipment ground for spa circuits, so the bare wire from NM cable does not qualify on the underground run. Fill math from Chapter 9: three 6 AWG THWN-2 plus one 10 AWG comes to about 0.17 square inches, which exceeds the 40 percent fill of 3/4 inch schedule 40 PVC. That is why 1 inch PVC is the right call, and it makes the pull far kinder anyway.
GFCI and the disconnect
NEC 680.44 requires GFCI protection for the spa outlet or field wired unit, which is handled with a 50 amp two pole GFCI breaker at the panel. The maintenance disconnect required by 680.13 must be within sight of the spa, readily accessible, and at least 5 feet horizontally from the water unless separated by a barrier. A non fused 60 amp spa panel outside the 5 foot line is the standard solution.
The trench and the details
Direct buried PVC on a 50 amp circuit needs 18 inches of cover per Table 300.5; the 12 inch allowance only applies to GFCI protected residential circuits of 20 amps or less. Come up out of the trench in rigid or schedule 80 where the conduit is subject to damage per 300.5(D). Bond any perimeter metal within 5 feet of the spa per 680.26, keep receptacles at least 6 feet from the water per 680.22, and leave the manufacturer's manual on site, because 110.3(B) makes its instructions enforceable and inspectors read the nameplate.
