What Wire Size Does a 32 Amp EV Charger Need at 240 Volts?

A user asked the app what gauge wire a 32 amp, 240 volt EV charger needs on a 60 foot run. The answer: a 40 amp circuit wired with 8 AWG copper.

EV charging is a continuous load

NEC 2023 Article 625 treats EV supply equipment as a continuous load, so per 625.41 and 210.20(A) the overcurrent device must be at least 125 percent of the charger rating. For 32 amps that is 40 amps, the next standard breaker size. The conductors then need an ampacity of at least 40 amps after any correction factors.

Why 8 AWG copper is the pick

In NM cable, 8 AWG copper is rated 40 amps in the 60 degree column that 334.80 forces you to use, which lands exactly on the requirement. In conduit with THWN-2, 8 AWG copper gives 50 amps at 75 degrees C, comfortable margin for a hot garage wall. Aluminum works too; 6 AWG aluminum at 50 amps in the 75 degree column is a fine feeder for this circuit if the charger terminals accept aluminum, which many do not, so check the listing first. Do not land 10 AWG on a 40 amp breaker for this; 240.4(D) and the continuous load math both rule it out.

The 60 foot run and voltage drop

At 32 amps over 60 feet of 8 AWG copper, voltage drop works out to roughly 3 volts, about 1.2 percent at 240 volts. That is well inside the 3 percent recommendation in the informational note to 210.19, so no upsizing is needed. Runs past about 130 feet are where 6 AWG starts earning its cost on a circuit like this.

Details that fail inspections

A hardwired charger needs the disconnecting means rules of 625.43 checked when the equipment is rated over 60 amps, which this one is not. A plug in unit on a 14-50 receptacle requires GFCI protection for the receptacle per 210.8(F) in garages and outdoors, and the receptacle should be listed for the purpose. Set the charger's onboard current limit to 32 amps and it will never see the breaker trip curve; that adjustment is exactly what 625.42 anticipates.
